F.x. Pichler Gruner Veltliner Durnsteiner Liebenberg Smaragd 2010

Wine spectator - 90: sourced primarily from a steep two acre parcel of old vines acquired the year before last and whose schistic terraces lucas pichler compares with achleiten, his 2010 gruner veltliner smaragd liebenberg offers another example of intensely ripe, seemingly sweet sensations – here of apple, pineapple and pink grapefruit – in a wine of analytic dryness. In this instance, though, that sweetness is not only a function of extract but also of glycerin from near-15% alcohol – high by the standards of this collection and, lucas pichler admits, a function of tricky determinations about when the flavors in this site (and largely from vines he and his father are just getting to know) had properly ripened, and about how to retard the grapes’ sugar accretion. Peat, salt, and crushed stone fascinatingly suffuse the rich palate and long finish of a wine less dynamic than many of the best 2010s but, for all that, imposing and only faintly warm. I would plan tentatively to drink it within 6-8 years.
